I have a good friend who’s single and doesn’t have kids. She’s close with her friends, goes to church weekly, and adores her brother’s family, who she sees every couple of months. We meet up for lunch every few weeks. She retired last year, and at first, everything seemed great. But at our last meet-up, she shared something unexpected.
When I asked how she was doing, she sighed and said she’d been feeling lonely. Each morning, her first thought was about whom she’d see that day. She realized she needed to be around people more, even if it was just a quick Zoom call. I was impressed with her self-awareness and we brainstormed ways she could connect with others more often.
As for me, I’m an introvert and live alone with my two cats. I actually enjoyed social distancing during COVID! I joke about meeting the man of my dreams but secretly hoping he doesn’t live too close. Despite this, I understand the importance of staying connected. I chit-chat with people daily, have family Zoom meetings, and lean on a group of supportive friends.
Connecting with others is a basic human need. Studies show that regular social interactions help us manage anxiety, stress, and even depression, as they offer support and a sense of belonging.
But, the benefits of social connections extend beyond emotional comfort. They also play a critical role in fostering healthy behaviors, reducing the risk of chronic illness, and enhancing the overall quality of life. Prioritizing relationships and participating in community activities can lead to long-term health improvements and a greater sense of fulfillment.
By recognizing the importance of community, we can better appreciate how social bonds shape our mental and physical well-being, empowering us to live healthier, more connected lives.
