The Power of Habits (and Why I Built My Own Tracker)

There’s a quote I come back to again and again:

“People do not decide their futures, they decide their habits —
and their habits decide their futures.”

I believe that with my whole heart. It’s not some massive life decision that suddenly transforms everything. It’s the consistent things we do every day that shape our lives. Habits are the quiet architects of our future.

Habits Build Routines. Routines Build Futures.

When I have strong habits in place, I feel more grounded, more capable, and more in control of my life. I’ve cultivated some really helpful routines over the years—but, like many people, I also fall off the wagon.

I sometimes stop doing even the simplest habits that I know improve my life. Take making the bed, for example. When I skip it, my whole day feels off. Whether it’s psychosomatic or not, I’ve noticed a real difference. When I make my bed, my day feels easier. More intentional. More pulled together. And yet, I still skip it sometimes.

Why? Who knows. Life gets in the way. Fatigue, distraction, emotional overwhelm—all of it can interfere. That’s why I need systems in place to support me when my willpower or motivation is low.

The Search for the Perfect Tool for Me (Spoiler: It Didn’t Exist)

Over the years, I’ve tried many things:

  • Paper habit trackers
  • Printable templates
  • Fancy habit-tracking apps
  • Bullet journals
  • Color-coded checklists

But nothing quite fit. Either the tool didn’t track the things I wanted, or it wasn’t customizable enough, or it was so complicated I stopped using it altogether. I wanted something that felt like me. Something simple, flexible, and meaningful.

So… I built it myself.

Introducing the Health Warriors Habit Tracker

I created a simple, web-based habit tracker that allows me to track the things I care about. It’s not flashy, and it doesn’t buzz with notifications or badges—well, it doesn’t buzz or anything yet, but I do like to tinker. 🤣 Still, it helps me stay connected to the habits that matter in my life.

And because small wins matter, I made sure to include some no-brainers — those easy, repeatable things that give me a boost just for showing up.

Here’s what I’m currently tracking:

Basic Habits

  • ✅ Made my bed
  • 🧼 Showered
  • 🪥 Brushed my teeth

Health Habits

  • 💧 Tracked how much water I drank (with a counter)
  • 💪 Worked out or moved my body
  • 🧺 Moved the laundry
  • 🧽 Scooped the litter box
  • 🍽️ Emptied the dishwasher

Mindset and Motivation

  • 🌞 What am I looking forward to today?
  • 📝 Morning Journal (space to write anything)
  • ✨ Five things I’m grateful for (morning)
  • 🧠 What are the most important things to accomplish today?
  • 💪 Hard things I did today
  • 🌟 What was the best part of my day? (before bed)
  • 🌙 Five things I’m grateful for (before bed)

Bonus: All-In-One Health Dashboard

Because I like seeing everything in one place, I also added a weight tracker to the app. No more bouncing between apps to keep track of my progress. It’s all here—my physical progress, my emotional mindset, and my daily wins—on one simple dashboard.

Track Your Mobility and Movement
One of the newest additions to the tracker is a movement log. Whether it’s a short walk, gentle stretching, chair exercises, or a full workout, you can now track your activity and mobility progress. This has been a game-changer for me. It helps me notice even the smallest improvements and stay encouraged, especially on days when moving my body feels extra challenging.

Visual Progress with Photo Tracking
Another exciting feature is visual progress tracking. You can upload and organize progress photos to see your transformation over time—not just by the numbers, but by how you look and feel. Seeing those small changes in photos can be incredibly motivating, especially when the scale isn’t moving as fast as you’d like. Progress is more than a number—and now you can see it.

Why I’m Sharing This

This isn’t about perfection. I don’t hit every habit every single day. But having this tool helps me reset, refocus, and move forward. It gives me a sense of accomplishment and reminds me that I’m taking care of myself—even in the smallest ways.

And if you’re anything like me—someone who wants a little structure, a little encouragement, and a lot of grace on your journey—I think you might love it too.
